Home / Air Breathing Apparatus
A Breathing Apparatus (BA) is a device designed to supply breathable air to individuals in environments where normal breathing may be compromised. It’s commonly used by firefighters, industrial workers, and rescue teams to protect against harmful fumes, smoke, and toxic gases. The BA consists of several main parts, including an air cylinder, a face mask, and a regulator to control air flow. In Self-Contained Breathing Apparatuses (SCBA), the air supply is carried on the user’s back, making it portable and ideal for moving through hazardous areas. Supplied Air Respirators (SAR) connect to an external air supply, allowing for prolonged use in industrial settings where mobility is less of a concern. The face mask creates a tight seal, preventing toxic air from leaking in, and the regulator adjusts the flow of air to match the user’s breathing rate. BAs typically provide 15 to 60 minutes of air, depending on the cylinder size and breathing rate. Regular maintenance and inspection are critical to ensure the apparatus functions effectively in emergencies.
